A position for a postdoctoral fellow is immediately available in the Plant Stress Signaling group at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (http://www.igc.gulbenkian.pt) located near Lisbon, Portugal, under the Project PTDC/BIA-PLA/3937/2012, financed by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

Research in the lab focuses on energy signaling and its connection to stress and the developmental plasticity of plants. SnRK1 kinases as key components of the stress response but they are also essential for the proper integration of environmental cues into growth and development. In order to understand how this is accomplished at the molecular level, we are currently undertaking several projects, all aimed at understanding how SnRK1s are regulated and at elucidating other upstream and downstream components of this central signaling pathway.

We have discovered that SnRK1 is negatively regulated by the same protein phosphatases that repress ABA signaling (Rodrigues et al., 2013, Plant Cell), allowing the modulation of SnRK1 activity by ABA in addition to energy cues and hence a more robust stress response through the interplay of two key pathways. Furthermore, we have recently identified other ABA-related components as SnRK1 interactors in yeast-two-hybrid screens. The present project aims at understanding the molecular details of the regulation of SnRK1 by PP2Cs as well as at investigating other levels of crosstalk between the SnRK1 and ABA signaling pathways, partly through the characterization of the recently uncovered components.

We are looking for a highly-motivated postdoc with a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or other related discipline. A strong background in molecular biology is a must. Experience in cell signaling, traditional biochemistry techniques (recombinant protein production, immunoprecipitation, protein complex isolation and/or cell fractionation), microscopy, and/or plant physiology is a plus.

Interested candidates should send CV, a letter of motivation with a brief description of previous research and contact details for 2-3 references in a single PDF document by email to igcpositions from igc.gulbenkian.pt. The e-mail subject should be "Postdoc Application PTDC/BIA-PLA/3937/2012".

The position is until the end of June 2015 but may possibly be extended beyond that date. The fellowship is 1495 euro/month.
