Dear Colleagues:

The Center for Biosystems Research (CBR) at the University of Maryland
Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) is seeking to fill a tenure track 100%
research faculty position to strengthen our complement of plant scientists.
The CBR offers an interdisciplinary research environment focusing on: (1)
the pathobiology of plant and animal diseases caused by parasites, fungi,
bacteria, viruses and viroids; (2) the biomolecular and metabolic
engineering of biosynthetic pathways for enhanced production of
metabolites, novel biomaterials and proteins of therapeutic and industrial
value; and (3) the use of genome sciences that integrate genetic,
phylogenetic, biochemical and computational approaches to advance
fundamental biological concepts and uncover novel applications.

CBR is located in the newly constructed Plant Sciences Bldg on the Campus
of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). CBR faculty have the
opportunity to interact with a number of UMCP departments and graduate
training programs, including a strong plant biology/Arabidopsis group
(http://www.life.umd.edu/labs/ATRIUM/index.html). Available resources
include fluorescent confocal and electron microscopy facilities, a suit of
environmental growth chambers, and core facilities for DNA microarray and
sequencing. In addition, construction is currently underway for a new
40,000 sq ft research greenhouse complex, and design has been completed to
expand CBR into a new 80,000 sq ft bldg that will include a 10,000 sq ft
plant transformation facility.

College Park is located in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and offers
a wealth of educational, cultural and recreational activities. CBR is just
minutes from the National Institutes of Health, USDA-Agricultural Research
Service in Beltsville, The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR), and other
government, private, and industrial research centers. Thus there exist
enormous opportunities to develop scientific interactions and

The Center for Biosystems Research (CBR; website:
http://www.umbi.umd.edu/~cab/) has a tenure-track, 100% research faculty
position available at the level of ASSISTANT or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR. The
CBR, one of five research centers of the University of Maryland
Biotechnology Institute, is located on the campus of the University of
Maryland, College Park. CBR provides a dynamic and interdisciplinary
research environment with access to several graduate training programs.
Areas of research within CBR emphasize pathobiology (plant and animal),
genome sciences, and biomolecular/metabolic engineering. The current
position is intended to strengthen the CBR's complement of Plant
Scientists; however, other highly qualified candidates with research
programs consistent with CBR's research foci will be considered. The
successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent,
high-quality, and extramurally supported research group with interest and
expertise in molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology,
biochemistry, or other areas relevant to modern plant biology. For full
consideration, submit current curriculum vitae; selected reprints; summary
of research interests; and three reference letters by December 10, 2002,
