University of Lausanne, Switzerland

Two PhD positions in plant biology are available in the laboratory of
Yves Poirier at the Institute of Ecology-Plant Biology, University of

One of the project is aimed at characterizing a family of membrane
proteins, recently identified in Arabidopsis thaliana,
which play an important role in the transport of inorganic phosphate in
plants (PHO1 genes, Plant Physiol. 97:1087-1093,

The second project is aimed at studying and modifying the pathways of
fatty acid biosynthesis and breakdown for the production of
polyhydroxyalkanoates, a family of biodegradable plastics and
elastomers (Cur. Opin. Biotechnol., 10: 181-185, 1999).

Both research projects make use of the tools of genetics, molecular and
cellular biology, as well as biochemistry.

The beginning of these PhD projects is expected for the period of
January-April 2001.
