Two full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are
available at
the University of Illinois to conduct research in an active group working
on the development of high oil, high oleic, value added maize hybrids.
This project is a coordinated effort between the University of Illinois and
some industrial collaborators; research will be conducted between the
laboratories of Drs. John Dudley, Nicki Engeseth, Robert Lambert, Torbert
Rocheford and Jack Widholm.
One position will beinvolved with producing corn oil with high oleic
acid and reduced levels of polyunsaturated fats. Responsibilities of this
position include manipulation of oleic acid content of corn oil by
development of gene constructs, particle bombardment and/or Agrobacterium
transformation of cultures, regeneration of cultures, assays for gene
insertion and expression, and evaluation of whole plant tissue and mature
seed for fatty acid composition. A Ph.D. in a relevant field and a strong
background in plant molecular biology is required. Expertise in tissue
culture and transgenic plant development, molecular mapping (assays and
analysis), maize genetics and lipid biochemistry are also preferred. The
position will be located in the laboratories of Drs. Engeseth and Widholm.
The other position will involve use of various molecular markers to map
genes controlling oil concentration in corn grain. The objective is to
facilitate development of corn hybrids with high oil concentrations for
improved feed efficiency. Primary activities will involve use of RFLP, SSR
and AFLP markers to map genes controlling oil concentration in segregating
populations. Statistical analysis of molecular marker data will be
involved increasingly as the project progresses. Some field work will be
required. Requirements are a Ph.D. in a biological, agronomic or related
field. Laboratory work experience is desirable and preferable, but not
required. Statistical analysis and breeding skills are also desirable.
This position will be in the laboratories of Drs. Dudley, Rocheford and
Each appointment is potentially for 3 years, with the second and third
year depending on availability of funds and satisfactory progress. Salary
is commensurate with experience. Review of applications will begin 5/1/98
and continue until a suitable person is identified. Please send a
Curriculum Vitae, a brief statement of research experience and future goals
and three letters of recommendation to: Dr. John Dudley, S-112 Turner Hall,
1102 S Goodwin, Urbana, IL 61801; E-mail: jdudley at uiuc.edu. The
University of Illinois is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
