Many thanks to the people who responded to my recent query regarding
databases for keeping track of lab plasmids/strains. The
spreadsheets/databases suggested were: hypercard, 4th dimension (for MACs)
and Filemaker Pro from Claris (for MACs). Mario (e-mail address =
mgg at bilbo.bio.purdue.edu) has designed a database structure for keeping track
of strains using 4th dimension. His program will keep track of strains,
matings, transformations and transductions. He offered to share this program
with anyone who is interested. In order to use his program you need either the
4th dimension program ($800 or $450 for educational institutions) or 4D
runner. Steve (e-mail address = SDELLAP at YaleVM.YCC.Yale.Edu) has written a
program for keeping track of strains/plasmids using Filemaker Pro. He has
also offered to share this program.
Thanks again to everyone who responded.
