Two postdoctoral positions are available to study protein
targeting and assembly in chloroplasts. The first position,
available in the early summer, continues our work on the
biogenesis of the photosynthetic oxygen-evolving complex. The
second position, available in Jan., 1993 (funding pending), will
take up work on a relatively new project designed to identify and
characterize components of the chloroplast protein import
machinery. Interested persons should consult Ettinger & Theg
(1991) J Cell Biol 115: 321-328, and Cline, Ettinger & Theg
(1992) J Biol Chem 267:2688-2696 for an overview of the general
strategies and methods used in this research.

Davis offers a unique setting in which to pursue interests in
plant cell biology. Persons filling these positions will
interact with one of the most diverse groups of plant scientists
in the country. In addition, they will become associated with
the NSF Plant Cell Biology Training Grant awarded to 12 Davis
faculty. This Training Grant sponsors a yearly research retreat,
seminars during the academic year, and operates a central
training facility containing a large collection of state-of-the-
art equipment used in cell biology.

Applicants should have both theoretical and practical training in
cell biology, biochemistry and/or molecular biology. Training in
plant sciences, biophysics or bioenergetics are not essential,
but would be a plus. Interested persons should send a curriculum
vitae, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three
references to: Steven M. Theg, Department of Botany, University
of California at Davis, Davis, CA 95616. For more information, I
can be reached by telephone at (916) 752-0624 or through Internet
