K. Arumuganathan in my lab has measured the nuclear DNA content of Arabidopsis
by flow cytometry of isolated nuclei stained with propidum iodide and has
results that may be of interest to the network.  Arabidopsis shows development-
ally regulated multiploidy in its tissues, with up to 6 peaks (2C, 4C, 8C, etc.
) in leaves but only 2 peaks in flower buds.  Nuclear DNA values were obtained
by comparing the 2C mean to that of an internal chicken red blood cell standard
 (2.33 pg.)  The 2C value for Arabidopsis is 0.30 +/- 0.012 pg (mean +/- S.D.,
n =36).  This is equivalent to 145 Mbp/1C.  These values are about twice those
usually cited for Arabidopsis.  This information will soon    be submitted for
