I don't know if this will be much help or of any relevance, but whilst
studying for my MSc at the University of Newcastle in the UK, I heard
that there was a group that was looking into the possibility of
mitochondrial dysfunction leading to osteoporoesis. I do not think that
they had managed to retrieve any solid results during my year at the
university, however it does sound like an interesting possibility?
