Indeed, there is a lively discussion going on about the relative
merits of various mathematical models of ageing, and has been for
a while (almost 200 years!). Some of the models are based on various
theories of aging, some on observed mortality rates, and some attempt
to address both at once. For starters, you could try:
Gavrilov and Gavrilova "The Biology of Life Span: A Quantitative Approach"
Finch and Hayflick "Handbook of the Biology of Aging"
Rose "Evolutionary Biology of Aging"
Vaupel et al. Science vol 258 pp 461-463
Wilson et al. Mechanisms of Ageing and Development vol 74 pp 15-33
Whitten Mechanisms of Ageing and Development vol 46 pp 175-?
You need access to a good science library, though. The only one I think
you could get in a bookstore is Rose's book.
